All Wrapped Up

Toim. huom:
Tähän mennessä kiveä on ehdotettu keltaiseksi akaatiksi. Vahvistusta joltain, joka asiasta tietää jotain, odotellaan.

TOIM HUOM 2:
----------
Emboldened by the positive attention to my first attempts, I set out to do some more wire wrapping.
The cheap glass cabochon is surrounded by silver plated copper, whereas the semi-precious stone is adorned with sterling silver.

Btw, if anyone knows what the yellow stone is, give us a shout, will you.

Edit: Yellow agate has been suggested. Awaiting further confirmation.

EDIT 2: It is indeed yellow agate, apparently most likely artificially dyed.
Cool! I had no idea you cold dye stones!

Wheeley
----
This looks rather like those wheeley things old women drag around. I had no such intention, but it is quite a funny association.

Unidentified yellow triangular stone slice
--------
This is quite a big pendant, about 2 inches wide at the top. I was originally hesitant because of the size, but I liked the colour so much I just had to buy it.

New Toys

Sellaista tapausta on kiittäminen allaolevasta.

Hopeoitua kuparilankaa, korvakorujen koukut sterling-hopeaa.

---------
It's very practical to have friends who travel the world and by coincidence often seem to end up close to large jewellery equipment retailers. One such case deserves the credit for what lies below. Straight from the USA, may I present, The WigJig®! Well, actually I couldn't be arsed to photograph the tool itself (do your own googling), but what came out of the said plastic contraption can be seen here.

Silver plated copper. Earring hooks sterling silver.

Hardly Knots

Rough Calculations

Lasketaan yhteen yksi koruilija ja yksi innokas kutoja, kerrotaan viehtymyksellä kiiltäviin juttuihin ja tulokseksi saadaan noin kuusi silmukkamerkkiä.

Lasia ja hopeoitua metallia.
-------
Add a beader and a knitter, multiply them by a fascination for pretty things and the result is about six loop marks.

Glass and silver plated metal bits.

Jossa on pilviä. Tummia, pyörteileviä pilviä.
-----
And yes, I have revamped the look of my blog. I got sick of the brown ready-to-use-template and found instead a blue ready-to-use-template. With clouds in it. Dark, swirly clouds.

Irish Paraphernalia

Erään tietyn nimeltämainitsemattoman harrastuksen tiimoilta, tulee mietittyä kaikenlaisia Irlantiin liittyviä asioita, kuten Irlanti-aiheisia koruja. Tässä jatkoa St. Patrick's Day sarjaan.

-----
On account of a certain hobby, I often end up thinking about all sort of Ireland related things. In this case it's Ireland- themed jewellery. Here we have another addition to the St. Patrick's Day series. A necklace & earrings set and a large shamrock pendant.

NB, the materials are relatively inexpensive partly on purpose, in order to minimise possible economical losses and/or emotional pain should a piece get lost or destroyed in the general mayhem that is St. Patrick's Day.

Another Display

------
In addition to needing calling cards, I apparently needed a new display. I put one together relatively quickly last night.
Materials: cardboard, wood glue, fleece, black cotton fabric, gaffe tape. And yes, the back does look as neat as the front.

Paper for a Change

Minulle kerrottiin, että tarvitsen käyntikortteja. Mietin noin minuutin, suuntasin paperikauppaan ja kotiin päästyäni aloin näpertää.
Tässä siis uudet käyntikorttini. Kotitekoisen näköisiä, kuten niiden kuuluukin olla.

------
I was told I need business cards. I gave it some thought, for about a minute, then headed to a stationery shop and started fiddling with my purchases as soon as I got home.
So here are my new business cards. Looking very home made, as they should.

In a Desk Corner

----------

This little thing -or rather the centrepiece- waited patiently in a corner of my desk for me to have time for it. A pat on the back to whoever figures out what the centrepiece is or what material it's made of :D.

Made to Order

--------

Occasionally I get a completely unexpected order when I'm just chatting about my stuff. Someone I know was admiring the things I've made when she suddenly developed a craving for something in black, grey and clear beads. I don't have anything in grey, but I do have some snowflake obsidian and I damn near begged to let her make me something out of that.
This is how it came out.

I'm still trying out different ways of photographing my creations so I'm departing from custom here and putting up two pics of the same piece.

Photo ops

-------

I got frustrated with my boring jewellery pics and so set out to try out a few things. I wanted fun backgrounds that would accentuate the jewellery, but would also be more than just a white canvas. Well, the white canvas is still there, I didn't get far enough along to remove it. Some of the results can be viewed below. I would like to emphasise that not only am I a novice with cameras, I'm limited as to my options concerning props and lighting. But who knows, perhaps practice makes even adequate.

The Oliphant

After some rummaging I decided to see if books would work as props. This particular brick can be seen from the outside in a latter picture. For some reason the necklace became too dark and so doesn't show too well, but I like the position and the way the text look in the background.

Bracelet with amethysts

I like the way this one sits on the book. However, my experiment on photographing in direct sunlight was not a success. All the soft shades and many of the shapes are just burned away.

Daisies and darkness

Tämä tuntuu toimivan aika mukavasti. Tumma tausta tuo esille puukuvioiden voimakkaat värit ja vaijeri asettuu mukavasti litteälle sivulle.

I kind of like the way this one works. The dark background brings out the strong colours in the wood and the wire sets itself down beautifully on the page.

Yesterday's earrings

Korvakorujen kuvaaminen on murheenkryyni, ne pitäisi saada ripustettua, mutta kuitenkin aseteltua mukavan taustan eteen. Päädyin ripustamaan ne kirjan reunaan. Ajan tummentama paperi itse asiassa tuo hyvin miellyttävällä tavalla esiin itse korujen sävyt.

Photographing earrings gives me gray hairs. They should be hung, but still have a nice background. This was chosen for purely the hanging feature, but turns out the yellowed old paper actually accentuates the shades in the jewellery quite nicely.

Timeless writing

Tämä on toinen suosikkikuvistani tässä sarjassa. Tausta tuntuu sopivan erinomaisesti koruun ja paksu kirja antaa painavalle korulle juuri sopivan vastuksen ja muodon. Ehkä tästä vielä tuleekin jotain.

Yes, I know it's a bad pun.
This is one of my two favourites in this set. The background and the necklace go well together and the heavy book gives a very nice position to the heavy strands. There just might be something there.

Much to my liking

This would be the favourite picture number 1. The top corner is too bright, but I like that effect. As I was processing this I noticed two things, first that the foreground is rather pixely -that was from the original photo in the book- and that the reflection of the necklace shows below it. I'm sure many would consider this a bad photo from a technical and stylistic point of view, but I just happen to like it.

Earring-Fu

--------
What could be a more fun way to spend an evening than doing battle with too soft silver wire. A smart beader would naturally have marked down what exactly it was that they bought on the first go, so that they would not end up buying the wrong wire and then stubbornly attempting to use it anyway despite of knowing better.
Glass and sterling silver.

Thursday 21 August 2008

Wire, oh wire.

---------
Wire is a daunting material for me, since it forgives little and is quick to display mistakes. I did pluck up the courage to try though. The public will kindly ignore the improvised support. It was the only easy way to show the transparency of the centerpieces.

This stone was purchased at a fair, not sure which it is but I might guess agate since that seems to be available in slices often.
The fixture is extremely simple, but works here. And even the hole was almost like it had been specially designed (and I'm restraining myself from making "intelligent design" jokes with great effort").

FIRST CABOCHON

Jossain vaiheessa ostin pussillisen koristeiksi tarkoitettuja halpoja lasipisaroita, joilla aioin harjoitella kapussitekniikkoja.

-------------
At some point I purchased a selection of cheap glass drops meant for decoration. I intended to use these to practice cabochon techniques and it only took me a few months to get something done about it. There's plenty of mistakes and things I'm not happy with there, but considering it was the first go ever, not too bad I'd say.

No, it's not pink.

Norsu emaloitua metallia.

-----------------
Though a pitch black one would be almost as unnerving. This used to be an earring but it suits a necklace so much better.
Glass and some poppy jasper. The elephant is enameled metal.

Random Sillyness

Toisinaan tekee mieli olla hupsu. Kuten esimerkiksi tekemällä rintaneuloja, joissa on kirjoja, liitutaulu ja nalle. Ja nallella tietenkin pitää olla rusetti kaulassa.

---------------
Sometimes sillyness is called for. One possible reaction is to make brooches with books, blackboards and teddybears in them. The teddybear wearing a bow, natch.

Modern tones

Niitä on hauska tehdä, saattaisin itsekin käyttää tämäntapaista aivan arkikoruna.

-------------
Some strange mental condition came over me and got me to make some minimalistic pendants.
I call them eyes, because they just seem like that to me. I enjoy making these and they would make a very nice, simple everyday pendant.

At Long Last...

Liian pitkä aika ilman koruilua ja liian pitkä aika ilman valokuvia koruista.
Osasyy koruilutaukoon oli toinen lukuisista pakkomielteistäni, puutarhanhoito. Pienellekin parvekkeelle mahtuu yllättävän monta eri kasvilajia.

-------------
It's been way too long since my last jewellery and my last jewellery pics. Partly the blame lies in one of my other obsessions, gardening. It is surprising how many different species of plants one can fit on even a small balcony. Sadly the weathergods didn't agree with me this year so the end results aren't too spectacular.

But back to the main point. I finally gathered enough courage to try out something that's been brewing in my mind and here's the result.

Yes, it's electrical wire. From the insides of a computer.

Maybe Your Heart Is Made of Stone

...maybe I'm just too blind to see.

David A. Stewart (ent. Eurythmics), loistavat kitarapätkät ja kasarihitti jota jopa kestää kuunnella nykyäänkin. Ah, nostalgiaa!

-----------
David A. Stewart (of Eurythmics fame), some amazing guitar-playing and an eighties hit I can actually still listen to. Ah, the nostalgy!

Of course it has absolutely nothing to do with the necklace here, other than the words "Heart of Stone" always conjure up the chorusline in a way Pavlov would be proud of.

Oh and btw, Eurythmics ROCKS!

And oh yes, stone heart, stone beads and seed beads of glass. Many beaders no doubt would frown upon such big, uneven seed beads, but I find they have a very appealing baroque feel to them.

NB: Pastel colours and especially pastel coloured hearts aren't really my style so this one's looking for a new loving home.

HEART OF STONE

Bicones Galore

Ending up in the possession of assorted, colourful bicones, one naturally starts practicing one's earring-fu. With the help of seed and bugle beads, glass beads, yellow quartz, silver wire and silver plated copper wire.

Silver, glass and stone

I finally gathered my courage and made these earrings with sterling silver. I was worried I might muck it up and waste valuable raw material, but the first try turned out all right after all.

An excuse to play with silver

And since I started...

Kun kerran vauhtiin pääsin...
----
While I'm at it...

CHORDS!!
Naruja!!

Chords and simplicity. Some fun little things when the brain is too tired to come up with something really creative.
(Check out the little hearts on the choker.)

St. Patrick's Day
Tarvitsin pikaisesti jotain vihreää pyhän patrikin päivän juhlallisuuksia varten ja näiden tekeminen oli huomattavasti miellyttävämpi vaihtoehto kuin koettaa etsiä kaupasta jokin asiaankuuluvasti värjätty vaatekappale.

I needed something green for the abovementioned holiday and this was easier than trying to find palatable clothing. The original isn't for sale but I could be persuaded to make another set for someone else...

For the 30th birthday
Käytän kovin vähän vihreitä vaatteita, mutta jostain syystä pidän vihreistä koruista.

I don't really wear much green, but for some reason I seem to like green jewellery. Perhaps it's just because the green shades in stones are much nicer than the greens available in clothing and fabrics.

Time Stood Still

-----------
There's something fascinating about clocks, even when they have stopped and are frozen forever in some particular moment in time. I found this one at a second hand shop, surrounded it with amethysts, rock crystals and glass, and thus turned into a pure (mere?) decoration.
It's six minutes to seven.

"Moment in Time"

Sunday 30 March 2008

Good morning, to one and for all!

-------------
The first entry in my new jewellery blog. The person behind all this is an enthusiastic amateur, who stumbles along learning mainly from her mistakes. Almost all the jewellery I make is for sale, if only for the reason that I could never get around to wearing them all. Below are a few samples which I am rather happy with.

GLACIALIS
Improvisoitu koru, ehdottomasti yksi suosikeistani. Tätä tuskin myyn, siinä määrin olen siihen mieltynyt.
*
Improvised piece, one of my favourites, no question. I don't think I'll sell this one, I like it way too much for that.

SEMPER VIRENS
Toinen ehdottomista suosikeistani. Alkuperäisen olen jo myynyt, tarkoituksena on tehdä toinen omaan käyttöön kunhan ehdin.
*
A second favourite. I've already sold the original one and mean to make another for my own use.

SAMMALKASTE
Tämän tein tilaustyönä, tuttavan pikkusisko oli vanhojen tansseihin menossa ja kaipasi pukuun sopivan korun. Todella hauska ja palkitseva työ tehdä.
*
This one was ordered by an acquintance whose little sister needed a necklace to suit her ballgown. Making this was fun.

VISTERIA
*
An improvised piece very pleasing to my eye. The shape is delicate and unusual, unfortunately I don't seem to have any clothes to go with this.

RANDOM
*
A truly random piece which resulted from a selection of mixed tubular beads ending up in my hands. I like wearing it, as it sits nicely around the neck and is colourful, yet not gaudy.

-
So much for the introduction. I'll add more pics as they become online and I'll photograph my new creations in due course.

Till we meet again,
W.L.
