Procrastinated Gardening

---------------
I'm about a month late with all things gardening this year. I blame the society. I held myself a labour camp for a few days and now I finally have planted the plantings and sown the sowings. The beans in particular seem determined to make up for the lost time, they've already grown considerably in a couple of days.

Iso kasvi vasemmalla on kaupasta ostettu (häpeäkseni joudun tunnustamaan, etten muista nimeä, vaaleanvihreä puska on joutomaalta pihistetty pieni tupas maksaruohoa. Näiden lisäksi terrassa on kolme ylettömän suloista mehitähteä, jotka olivat läheisen marketin puutarhaosastolla alennuksessa.
--------------------
A few weeks ago I found this little treasure in one of the house's waste bins. It's a small aquarium, with even a bag of rubble included. For a while now I've wanted to give a succulent terrarium a try, and this discarded fish bowl was just the perfect thing for it. The big plant on the left is something I bought at a shop, but (for my great shame) can't remember the name for. The light green bush is a Sedum I stole at an unused plot of land. There are also three small, incredibly cute Sempervivums, which were on sale at a local supermarket.

Papupurnukoissa on lisäksi samettikukka kussakin torjumassa tuholaisia.
---------------
The next three photos show the rest of my plantings. The box on the railing has decorative cress in it. The white boxes have assorted seeds along with chives and thai-basil. The milk jugs placed in the wooden crate house garlics and the trellis is there for the abovementioned beans. Each of the bean pots also has a tagetes bunch to ward off pests. The round pots further off have sweet peas. My houseplants are also there. At this point I'm already beginning to forget what I sowed where, but at least that way I won't be as disappointed when things don't grow after all...
After using up almost all my wood chippings, I opted for using chopped up grass as a covering on the pots. It seems to be retaining the moisture in the soil very well and also appears to insulate the soil very efficiently against the sun and the wind. And though my balcony is a regular wind tunnel, it doesn't seem too prone to be blown away. Also, I like the way it looks and the faint scent it gives off.

----------------
And this is what I built the aforementioned greenhouse for. Tiny cucumbers planted in plastic storage boxes. Unless my judgement is failing me, they're already growing at amazing speed only a couple of days afer planting. And why not, the plastic shelter should give them stable humidity and temperature.

------------------------
And one more thing, my latest acquisition. I should've thought about this years ago, but I suppose one can't always have clever moments. It's a 50 litre pail for collecting rainwater and water for the plants in general. Watering becomes instantly so much easier when I don't have to lug the 10 litre watering jug to the bathroom and back every damn time.

Toisin ajateltuna - Slightly Unfortunate

Since it's a rainy and drowsy Sunday, here's a small, lighthearted stroll through the darker recesses of the crafty Internets.

Sometimes crafters don't seem to think things quite through, resulting in finished objects that are... a bit unfortunate.

The headlines are links to the original websites. Just so that my readers can verify that no, I did not make this up.

Party Wreath

Kenties hienovarainen muistutus vanhemmilta teinin syntymäpäivänä..?

Perhaps intended as a subtle reminder from the parents on a teenager's birthday..?

Hidden in Plain Sight

Tästä nukesta on olemassa myös poikaversio. Tosin mielestäni tyttönukke on jollain tapaa häiritsevämpi.
----------------
There's also a boy. But I think the girl is more disturbing. And I think they are made MORE disturbing by the fig leaf, not less.

Not Particularly Appetising

Miniatyyriruoat ovat toisinaan aika kiintoisia. Toisinaan taas ne ovat... Tuota noin... jotain aivan muuta.

Miniature foods are a tricky business. Sometimes it just goes... wrong. So wrong.

A Small Interlude

Olen ollut laiska. En ole saanut oikeastaan mitään käsitöitä aikaiseksi, enkä myöskään juurikaan valokuvaillut muitakaan asioita. Ainut aikaansaannokseni, joka voitaisiin erittäin hyvällä tahdolla lukea näpertelyksi, on kynsilakoilla leikkiminen. Joten ettei blogi täysin kokisi hellekuolemaa, tässä pari kuvaa kynsistäni. Onpahan vaihtelua.
Ensimmäisessä kuvassa on pikkutemppu, jonka keksin aivan vahingossa. Yritin marmorointia, mutta päädyinkin tekemään tällaisia vinkeitä läpikuultavia kuvioita.
------------------
I've been lazy. I haven't achieved much anything in the tinkering front and haven't photographed much anything either. The only thing even close, would be playing around with nail polishes. So to keep the blog from succumbing to a slow death by heatwave, here are a few nail photos. Hey, it's a change at least.
The first one shows a nifty little trick I discovered quite by accident. I tried marbling, but failed. Instead I got these cool glowy patterns.

Toisessa kuvassa on vasta hankkimani hopeanvärinen krakleelakka mustalla pohjalla. Sudin lakan eri tavoin kynsiin, siitä kuvioiden vaihtelu. Tätä tulen käyttämään jatkossakin innolla. Lakkana Limited Edition crackle, w7.

The second photo shows my new silver crackle polish. The differences in pattern are created by applying the varnish differently. I'll definitely be happy to wear this in the future too. The varnis: Limited Edition crackle w7.

Jesus Tape and the Greenhouse Effect (100!!!)

En uskonut niiden pärjäävän sellaisenaan parvekkeellani, joten halusin niille kasvihuoneen. Olin aikaisempina vuosina nähnyt markkinoilla mukavan korkeita parvekekasvihuoneita. Tiedättehän, niitä heppoisia viritelmiä, joissa metallikehikon päällä on muovihuppu.

---------------------
It all began when I got the bright idea to try growing cucumbers. I didn't think they'd fare too well on my balcony as such, so I wanted a greenhouse for them. In previous years I had seen plenty of nice and high balcony greenhouses for sale. You know the type, a flimsy metal frame with a plastic hood over it. But of course the usual happened, ie. when I decide I want one, they're nowhere to be seen. I could only find greenhouses a bit over a metre high and as a perennial optimist (cough) I naturally expect my cucumbers to grow much higher than that.

So I thought that if I can't find one, maybe I could make one. A local Swedish cheapo hardware store chain provided the material for this prototype; a storage shelf, painter's protective plastic and jesus tape.

Kasasin hyllykön jättäen keskimmäiset hyllyt pois, koska tarkoituksenani on kasvattaa köynnöksiä.
----------------
I have no photos of the process, because I was too preoccupied with figuring it out and doing the actual building. But I took some of the finished greenhouse, I hope they give some sort of idea of the construction.

I assembled the thing with with only the top and bottom shelves, because the whole thing is meant for vines. If all the shelves were included, the greenhouse would work for pots. I surrounded the shelves with two layers of the plastic sheeting. I wanted thicker plastic, but the only clear plastic sheeting available was the thin kind. The 55cm wide plastic I bought had some painter's tape attached on one side, and it seemed suitable for this purpose. I later found that this painter's tape doesn't hold for too long, but at the construction stage it came in handy. My original plan was to construct a separate bag out of the plastic, which I would then pull over the shelves, but I ended up just taping the sheets onto the shelves. A stronger and stiffer plastic might have been easier to handle and thus better for constructing a separate bag.
I haven't attempted disassembling the greenhouse. It should be possible by detaching the tapes at the bottom and wrapping the plastic around the top shelf, and disassembling the shelve structure, storing the whole thing in parts. That said, this is really only intended to be one summer solution, so that may never be a major consideration.

Tässä kasvihuone kuvattuna edestä ja takaa. Etupaneelissa on ylimääräinen läppä sulkemassa muoviin jäänyttä rakoa. Tämän läpän saa käännettyä sivuun kun kasvihuoneen sisuksiin täytyy päästä käsiksi.
----------------
Front and back view. The front has a separate panel covering a divide in the front plastic. This panel can be turned aside when the greenhouse needs to be opened.

Kaksi kuvaa yläreunan rakenteesta. Siellä missä teippi menee pystysuoraan, on muovipintojen sauma. Nämä teippaukset ovat sekä sisä- että ulkopuolella. Jälkimmäisessä kuvassa näkyy, miten muovin yläreuna on kiinnitetty ylähyllyyn.
----------------
Two pics of the upper end structure. Vertical tapes indicate a seam in the plastic sheeting, these tapes are both inside and outside. The second photo shows how the upper edge of the plastic is attached to the shelf.

Kuva etupaneelin läpästä suljettuna. Yläkulma kiinnittyy kattoon palalla jeesusteippiä.
------------------
The closing panel in the front while closed. The top corner is attached to the roof with a piece of tape.

-----------------
The front of the greenhouse with the top panel drawn open. The two plastic sheets in the front are attached only at the top, so they can be pulled aside like curtains when the greenhouse needs to be opened. The panels have attachment loops in the middle and at the bottom to keep them closed at other times.
(NB: I intend to finish the centre edges of the "curtains" with jesus tape. So far the only there's only the plastic sheeting's own tape keeping the sheets together and that's beginning to come off.)

Kaksi yksityiskohtaa.
--------------
Two details.
The first photo is from the inside of the greenhouse. The greenhouse is attached to the balcony railing with zip ties, as it otherwise would get blown over by the first gust (and my balcony is WINDY). Whereever the plastic is punctured, the hole is fortified with jesus tape on both sides to keep the plastic from tearing. The second photo shows the closures, which really are nothing but wire loops tied together with string.

BILEET!!
-------------------
So there you have it. The summer will show if the thing is worth the time and money put into it. Hopefully it will provide at least a little bit cozyer circumstances for my cucumbers than just an open pot on the balcony. I may post more photos later when the seedlings have moved in.

Oh, and by the way, this was the hundreth post in my blog!!!
Par-Ty!!
