Blue Books

Näin vuoden ensimmäisenä arkipäivänä olisikin hyvä hetki toivottaa kaikille hyvää uutta vuotta ja päivittää blogia. Joten voitte pitää itseänne toivoteltuina, olkaa hyvä.

Olen jo aika kauan antanut äidilleni joululahjaksi itse tekemiäni asioita ja tänä vuonna toin kuvioon lisämausteen. Sen sijaan, että olisin tehnyt tekeleeni valmiiksi etukäteen, otinkin mukaan materiaalit ja tarjosin äidilleni joululahjaksi paitsi tekeleen, myös työnäytöksen. Tämä otettiinkin ilolla vastaan, samoin kuin valmis lahjakin.

Olin välittänyt äidilleni syksyn aikana kaveriltani käytetyn filmijärkkärin, koska äitini vanha kamera oli hajalla, eikä hän ole sinut digilaitteiden kanssa. Koska toivon mukaan hän tulee räpsimään enemmänkin kuvia, tuumasin hänen tietysti tarvitsevan valokuva-albumin parhaille kuville. Mikäs sen parempi joululahja siis.

I think the first work day of the year is a good time for wishing all and sundry good new year and for blog updating. So consider yourselves all well-wished, please.

For some years now I've given my mother handmade things for Christmas and this year I added a twist. Instead of finishing my gift beforehand, I took the materials with me and included a demonstration with the gift itself. I'm happy to say both were very well received.

I'd arranged for my mum to buy a second hand film camera (system camera? single lens reflex? whatevs), since her old camera was busted and she doesn't speak digimachine. Since I hope she'll take plenty of pics, I thought she'll naturally need a photo album for the best ones. So what better Christmas present.



Päädyin tekemään kaksi albumia saatavilla olevista työkaluista ja materiaaleista johtuen. Halusin niihin tukevat kannet, mutta halusin niiden myös aukeavan nätisti, joten päädyin kokeilemaan koptisidosta (oletan tämän olevan oikea käännös). Käytin tätä ohjetta pienin muunnoksin. Ohje oli mielestäni helppo ja selkeä seurata, tosin tein klassisen virheen ensimmäisen kirjan kanssa, enkä lukenut ohjetta loppuun ennen kuin aloitin ja jouduinkin korjaamaan siitä johtuneen virheen improvisoimalla.

Lehdet ja kansien päällys ovat A4-kokoisia askartelu- ja printtipapereita, kansien sisus on pahvia ja sidos on tehty puuvillaisella kirjontalangalla, toiseen albumiin vihreällä ja toiseen sinisellä. Paperit on taitettu kahtia, eli albumit ovat siis A5-kokoisia. Työkaluina käytin käyrää neulaa ja ompelunaskalia, lisäksi tarvitsin puikkoliimaa ja viivoitinta. Hieman tuli kiroiltua ensimmäisen albumin kanssa, mutta toinen sujuikin sitten helpommin. Pidän tästä tekniikasta, todennäköisesti jatkossakin tulen sitomaan kannelliset kirjat näin.

Olen kovin tyytyväinen näihin pikku kirjoihin, aloittelijan virheistä huolimatta niistä tuli mielestäni kovin nättejä.

I ended up making two albums, due to tools and materials available. I wanted them to have sturdy covers, but also to open well, so I decided to try coptic binding. I used this tutorial with small adaptations. I found the tutorial simple and easy to follow, though I did make the classic mistake and neglected to read it through before starting. I therefore made a mistake with the first book and had to improvise my way through some of it.

The pages and surfaces of the covers are A4-size craft and printing papers, the inside of the covers is thick cardboard and the binding is made with cotton embroidery thread, green in one book and blue in the other. Each sheet is folded in double, so the albums are size A5. My tools were a crescent shaped needle and a sewing awl, I also needed some stick glue and a ruler. I did some swearing with the first album, but the second one was a lot easier. I like the technique, I think I'll use this for any future hard cover book I want to make.

I'm very happy with these two little books. Despite a few beginner's mistakes, they turned out quite pretty.

Testing Techniques

Nukuin noin neljä tuntia eli lyhyestä virsi kaunis. Saatoin loppuun pari uutta aluevaltausta ja sain iloisen yllätyksen.

I slept about 4 hours last night so without further ado. I finished up a couple of experiments and received a pleasant surprise.


Päätin kokeilla kankaanpainantaa erikeeperimenetelmällä. Tein tämän ohjeen mukaan, paitsi Modge Podgen sijaan käytin puuliimaa, joka toimi aivan hyvin. Lisäksi en piirtänyt kuvaa seulakankaaseen, vaan maalasin liiman suoraan alkuperäisen kuvan perusteella. Tämä onnistui siten, että alimmaisena oli alkuperäinen kuva, sitten liuska muovia ja sen päällä seulakangas. Tuputin kangasvärin sienellä seulan läpi. Valitettavasti seulakankaana käytetty kaapista löytynyt halpa huivi sisälsi leveämpia kuteita välissä, eikä väri mennyt tasaisesti näiden läpi. No eipä mitään, ensimmäiseksi kokeiluksi aivan siedettävä.

I decided to decide screen printing with the woog glue technique. I followed this tutorial, but used wood glue instead of Mod Podge. Seemed to work fine. I also didn't draw on the screen fabric itself, but painted the glue without this step. I had the original picture at the bottom, a sheet of plastic on top of it and then the screen fabric, all fastened together with pins. I pushed the dye through with a sponge. Unfortunately the screen fabric had wider threads, which kept the dye from passing through. Oh well, perfectly adequate for the first try.

The fabric is an old pillow case from a flea market, hence the cutesy pattern.

I got some metal plates at a hardware store and covered them with patterned paper and varnished them. I wanted fabric weights. I got some. I'm quite happy with these, even if some of them show the signs of being a first try. The fastening is fabric leftovers.

And then the pleasant surprise. This arrived.

Siellä oli sisällä tämmöisiä. 3 erilaista teetä, 6 pussia karkkia, 2 lakutankoa, 3 suklaalevyä, kandisokeritikkuja, pussi nekkuja, matka/senttimitta ja tosi kiva teekuppi.

These were inside. 3 bags of tea, 6 bags of sweets, 2 liquorice rods, 3 chocolate bars, sugar sticks and sticky sweets, distance/cm measure and a really nice teacup.

Warm Hands for Summer and Other Distractions

Kudoin joku aika sitten valmiiksi puuvillarannikkaat viileitä kesäsäitä tai tietokoneella istumista varten, mutta sain ne valokuvattua vasta nyt. Käytin värikokeiluna olleista langoista turkoosivalkoisen vyyhdin, tai ainakin suurimman osan vyyhdistä. Tarkkasilmäinen katsoja huomaa että rannikkaat on viimeistelty hieman eri tavoin, jäivät kesken ja tein klassisen virheen enkä kirjoittanut ohjeeseen tekemiäni muutoksia ylös. Ohje oli Seeta Fingerless Gloves, jota muutin sen verran, että tein rannikkaista lyhyemmät ja peukalosta ainoastaa kiilan, en itse peukaloa. Samainen tarkkasilmäinen katsoja huomaa rannikkaissa myös olevan jo käytön jälkiä. Minkäs teet, mukavat ovat ja omistaja on laiska kuvaaja.

A while back I finished knitting a pair of fingerless cotton gloves for chilly summer weather and drafty work rooms, but only got around to photographing them now. I used the white-turquoise yarn from this batch of colour experiments. The hawk-eyed viewer will notice that the finishing is slightly different in each, thanks to the long break in between and the classical mistake of not writing down the adjustments made to the pattern. The pattern, incidentally, was Seeta Fingerless Gloves, which I made shorter and left out the thumb part. The same hawk-eyed viewer will also notice signs on wear on them. What can you do, comfy gloves and a lazy owner.

Saatoin valmiiksi pitkään uinuneen projektin, neulakirjan. Uinumisen syy, ompelin käsin enkä onnistunut ensimmäisellä kerralla tekemään tarpeeksi siistiä jälkeä. Piti purkaa, mikä ärsytti. Mutta nyt on valmis. Kiinnityksenä korulukon puolikas ja hiuslenkki.

I finished up a little something that had hibernated for a long time, thanks to my annoyance at my ugly handstitching. But now I unravelled and redid it and now it's nice. The closure is one half of a jewellery clasp together with a hair elastic.

Mutta ehdoton suosikkini tämänpäivän esiteltävistä on tämä. Yksi varhaisia kehruukokeilujani, mustaa ja valkoista merinoa sekaisin ja mukana puuvillakuitua. Tämä pikkuvyyhti värjättiin hailakan lilaksi kasviväreillä, mutta lopputulos ei tyydyttänyt. Nyt sattui olemaan värikattilassa punaista tähteenä ja keksin heittää tämän sinne lillumaan. Lopputulos onnistui yli odotusten. Sävyt ovat kuin murskatuissa mustikoissa, mustasta marjapuuron sävyihin. Pidän todella paljon.

But my absolute favourite of today's post is this. One of my early spinning experiments, black and white merino combined with some cotton fibre. This little skein was dyed with plant dyes into a faint purple, which I didn't particularly appreciate. I happened to have the leftovers of red dye in my dyeing pot and I thought of throwing this in there to see what would happen. The result was beyond expectations. The shades are like in a bowlfull of crushed blueberries (the proper kind), from black to almost purplish pink. I like this one very much.

I found this page with directions how to make page corner bookmarks. The originals were folded out of card stock. I made mine by glueing pictures out of magazines onto pieces of thin cardboard (I don't really go for cartoonish monsters). I used already rectangular cardboard pieces, so less cutting out shapes was involved. Some have a single picture on the front side, some two different pics.

Vanhaa, uutta ja vanhasta uutta - Old, New and New out of Old

Aloittakaamme vanhasta.
Kirpputorilta löydetty lankakerä, materiaalista ei hajuakaan, ohutta kuin henkäys, koostuu kahdesta säikeestä, joista toinen valkoinen ja toinen turkoosi. Värin takia ostin. Tässä vyyhditettynä n 37g eli suunnilleen puolet kerästä. Vyyhditin sen pesua varten ja ai turkanen kun noin ohuen langan vyyhdittäminen olikin tuskaa. Kuva jostain syystä häivyttää valkoisen säikeen lähes täysin, mutta siellä se on.

Let's start with the old.
A yarn ball I picked up at a flea market. No idea of the material, incredibly thin with two strands, one white and one turquoise. The colour attracted me, no clue what I'll do with it. This skein is about 35g big, roughly half of the ball. I wound it into a skein to wash it and I'll be damned if skeining yarn this thin wasn't a pain in the arse.

Sitten vanhasta uutta, osa 1. Toiselta kirppisreissulta tarttui mukaan puuvillainen neuletakki, jonka ulkopuoli oli ilmeisesti tarkoituksella haalistettu sisäpuolen säilyttäessä alkuperäisen värinsä. Katselin sitä aikani ja aloin ihmetellä, minkähänlaisen värikuvion kyseinen käsittely jätti lankaan. Parisen euroa maksoin siitä ilosta, että sain tämän asian selville. Lopputuloksena punaista valkotäpläistä lankaa n 450g.

Next, new out of old, part 2. On another flea market trip I came across a cotton sweater, the outside of which was bleached apparently on purpose, while the inside remained bright red. I took a long look at it and started wondering what sort of pattern would such treatment leave on the yarn. It cost me a couple of euro and some hours to find out. The end result was about 450 grams of red yarn with white spots.

Vanhasta uutta, osa 2.
Kesäiseltä automatkalta Italiaan jäi käsiin pari tiekarttaa, joita en halunnut heittää pois, mutta en myöskään säilyttää sellaisenaan. Jostain sain päähäni laminoida kartanpalat kirjamuovilla. Heitetään mukaan hieman jeesusteippiä ja siitä saakin jo melkein mitä vain.
Suuremmasta ja hienommasta kartanpalasta tuli kotelo läppärille. Tällä hetkellä sitä pitää kiinni leveästä kuminauhasta ommeltu lenkki, jos jaksan saatan liimata läppään tarranauhaa sen sijalle.

New out of old, part 2.
A summer roadtrip in Italy left me with two pieces of road maps, which I neither wanted to throw away nor keep a they were. I got the idea from somewhere that I could laminate them with some self adhesive plastic (normally used for covering books). That together with some gaff tape and almost anything is possible. The nicer and bigger map piece became a laptop sleeve. Currently it's held closed by a band of elastic, but if I can be bothered I may glue some velcro on the flap instead.

Pienempi ja hieman tylsempi kartta muuttui A4-kansioksi. Tässä ei ole erillistä kiinnitystä, reunaläppä vain sujahtaa kansion sisään.

The smaller and less interesting map became an A4-folder. This one doesn't have any specific closure, the flap simply folds inside the folder.

Ja lopuksi uutta.
Tämänhetkinen ylpeydenaiheeni on vasta valmistunut Sagrantino-huivi, jonka ohje löytyy Ravelrystä. Ensimmäinen kuvasetti ei onnistunut toivotulla tavalla, päivä oli liian pitkällä ja valo vääränlaista. Kyllä näistä kuvista kuitenkin jonkinlaisen aavistuksen saa. Lankana oli vihreä Regian hand-dye effect (06554). Ikävä vain käyttämäni kaksi kerää ovat eri värieristä ja niissä on hienoinen sävyero. Malli kuitenkin salli kerien vuorottelun, eikä lopputuloksessa ero näy häiritsevästi.

And finishing off with the new.
My source of pride for the moment is my newly finished Sagrantino-shawl, pattern for which is available on Ravelry. The first set of photos is less than satisfactory, the day was too far gone already and the light completely wrong. Still, you get an idea of what it looks like. The yarn is green version of Regia hand-dye effect (06554). Unfortunately the two balls I managed to get my hands on were from different dye lots and had subtly different hues. The pattern however allowed me to mix the yarns enough, so that the difference isn't a problem in the finished shawl.
