All Dressed Up

Löysin kirppiskierrokselta kolme tosi kivaa mekkoa. Valitettavasti vain yksi niistä sopi päälle sellaisenaan. Tässä on toinen kahdesta muokkausta vaatineesta mekosta. Ihastuin tämän väriin ja kankaaseen, mutta valitettavasti vyötärö oli taas aivan liian alhaalla. Nostin vyötärön ja otin selästä sisään suurentamalla muotolaskoksia. Vyölenkkien näköiset tampit osoittivat alunperin ylöspäin, mutta käänsin ne toiseen suuntaan, koska se pidensi yläosaa visuaalisesti. Korjaus onnistui yli odotusten, en tiennyt osaavani näin hyvin!
Pidän mekosta todella paljon, väri on upea ja kangas pellavaa. Tästä taitaa tulla suosikkivaate.

Kyllä, ensimmäisestä kuvasta puuttuu pää tarkoituksella. Kuva otettiin treenien jälkeen, enkä todellakaan ollut edustavimmillani.

I found three lovely dresses at a flea market the other day, but only one of them fit as it was. Here's one of the two dresses that needed adjusting. I loved the colour and the fabric but sadly the waistline was way too low, as usual. I raised the waist and took it in at the back by making the darts bigger. The epolet-like belt loops were originally turned upwards, but I turned them so they point down. This makes the top half look longer. The adjustments worked better than I dared hope, I had no idea I could sew this well!
I like this dress quite a bit. The colour's fantastic and the fabric pure linen. I have a hunch this one will be a lasting favourite.

Yes, the first pic is decapitated on purpose. It was taken after dance practice and I wasn't at my best.

Warm Hands for Summer and Other Distractions

Kudoin joku aika sitten valmiiksi puuvillarannikkaat viileitä kesäsäitä tai tietokoneella istumista varten, mutta sain ne valokuvattua vasta nyt. Käytin värikokeiluna olleista langoista turkoosivalkoisen vyyhdin, tai ainakin suurimman osan vyyhdistä. Tarkkasilmäinen katsoja huomaa että rannikkaat on viimeistelty hieman eri tavoin, jäivät kesken ja tein klassisen virheen enkä kirjoittanut ohjeeseen tekemiäni muutoksia ylös. Ohje oli Seeta Fingerless Gloves, jota muutin sen verran, että tein rannikkaista lyhyemmät ja peukalosta ainoastaa kiilan, en itse peukaloa. Samainen tarkkasilmäinen katsoja huomaa rannikkaissa myös olevan jo käytön jälkiä. Minkäs teet, mukavat ovat ja omistaja on laiska kuvaaja.

A while back I finished knitting a pair of fingerless cotton gloves for chilly summer weather and drafty work rooms, but only got around to photographing them now. I used the white-turquoise yarn from this batch of colour experiments. The hawk-eyed viewer will notice that the finishing is slightly different in each, thanks to the long break in between and the classical mistake of not writing down the adjustments made to the pattern. The pattern, incidentally, was Seeta Fingerless Gloves, which I made shorter and left out the thumb part. The same hawk-eyed viewer will also notice signs on wear on them. What can you do, comfy gloves and a lazy owner.

Saatoin valmiiksi pitkään uinuneen projektin, neulakirjan. Uinumisen syy, ompelin käsin enkä onnistunut ensimmäisellä kerralla tekemään tarpeeksi siistiä jälkeä. Piti purkaa, mikä ärsytti. Mutta nyt on valmis. Kiinnityksenä korulukon puolikas ja hiuslenkki.

I finished up a little something that had hibernated for a long time, thanks to my annoyance at my ugly handstitching. But now I unravelled and redid it and now it's nice. The closure is one half of a jewellery clasp together with a hair elastic.

Mutta ehdoton suosikkini tämänpäivän esiteltävistä on tämä. Yksi varhaisia kehruukokeilujani, mustaa ja valkoista merinoa sekaisin ja mukana puuvillakuitua. Tämä pikkuvyyhti värjättiin hailakan lilaksi kasviväreillä, mutta lopputulos ei tyydyttänyt. Nyt sattui olemaan värikattilassa punaista tähteenä ja keksin heittää tämän sinne lillumaan. Lopputulos onnistui yli odotusten. Sävyt ovat kuin murskatuissa mustikoissa, mustasta marjapuuron sävyihin. Pidän todella paljon.

But my absolute favourite of today's post is this. One of my early spinning experiments, black and white merino combined with some cotton fibre. This little skein was dyed with plant dyes into a faint purple, which I didn't particularly appreciate. I happened to have the leftovers of red dye in my dyeing pot and I thought of throwing this in there to see what would happen. The result was beyond expectations. The shades are like in a bowlfull of crushed blueberries (the proper kind), from black to almost purplish pink. I like this one very much.

Yet Another Shoulder Warming Thing

Olkapäitä lämmittäviä juttuja ei koskaan ole liikaa. Turhanpäiväisiä kangaspaloja sen sijaan useinkin on. Kaapissani oli punainen kirppikseltä löydetty nelikulmainen huivi (tai pöytäliina), jota en oikeastaan ikinä käyttänyt, koska neliönä se oli hyödytön ja kolmioksi taitettuna aivan liian paksu. Sain sitten idean, miten tehdä siitä käyttökelpoisempi.
Leikkasin huivin halki yhdestä kärjestä keskustaa kohti ja keskustasta pois ympyrän muotoisen palan. Leikkuureunoihin ompelin käsin kirjontalangalla päärmeen. Lopputuloksena mukava neliön muotoinen shaali, jonka saa kätevästi kiedottua kaulan ympärille niin halutessaan.
Kuvat ovat huonoja, valitan valon ja kameran heikkoa tasoa.

There's never too many shoulder warming thingies. Useless fabrice pieces however, often are plentiful. I had a red fleamarket scarf (or table cloth for all that I know) which rarely saw use. It was too thick to be worn as a triangle and useless as a square. I had an idea how to turn it into a useful garment.
I split the scarf from one corner to the centre and cut out a circular piece of the centre. I turned the raw edges and sewed them by hand using embroidery thread. The result is a very nice square shawl which is very easy to wrap around the shoulders and neck.
The pics are bad. I blame bad lighting and bad camera.

I found this page with directions how to make page corner bookmarks. The originals were folded out of card stock. I made mine by glueing pictures out of magazines onto pieces of thin cardboard (I don't really go for cartoonish monsters). I used already rectangular cardboard pieces, so less cutting out shapes was involved. Some have a single picture on the front side, some two different pics.

More Plants

Puutarhuroinnissa on se hyvä puoli, että alkutöiden jälkeen omaa kätten jälkeä pääsee ihastelemaan ilman, että tarvitsee tehdä paljon mitään. Riittää kun kastelee, lannoittaa ja siistii kasvustoja. Sillä olen siis viime aikoina tyydyttänyt luomistarvettani. Mistä johtuen on vuorossa jälleen yksi kasvipäivitys. Kärsikää.

The good thing about gardening is that after the initial work you can enjoy satisfaction of achievements without doing much anything. All you need to do is to water, fertilise and occasionally tidy up the plants. Therefore, here's yet again one post about plants. Deal with it.

The first flower in my sunflower is wilting. I haven't had the heart to snip it off quite yet to make room for the next ones. It's so beautiful next to the Diascias.

My Tagetes are blooming beautifully. Seems I was a bit careless with watering, there's drops everywhere.

Fixing a Software Problem with Gaffe Tape

Koneeni webbikamerassa oli yksi ongelma sitä Skypen kautta käyttäessäni. Se ei sietänyt ulkoilmaa. Kun koetin parvekkeella sitä käyttää, lopputulos muistutti lähinnä near-death-kokemuksen hallusinaatiota.

My laptop's webcam had a problem when used via Skype. It doesn't like the outdoors. When I tried to use it while out on my lovely balcony, the end result resembled some kind of near death experience hallucination.

Mitään helppoa konstia säätää webbikameran valoisuutta ei löytynyt. Yksi mahdollisuus olisi ollut päätteen kautta muuttaa asetuksia naputtelemalla jotain sopivaa komentoriville, mutta kuinka ollakaan, sitä varten olisi täytynyt päivittää käyttis. Mikä pitikin tehdä, mutta sitten kävi yhtä sun toista, eikä sitä voinutkaan tehdä.

Tänään sitten sain jostain kumman syystä päähäni sovittaa webbikameran päälle aurinkolaseja ja kuinka ollakaan, se toimi. Onneksi myös olen parantumaton hamsteri, joka ei heitä mitään pois, sillä eräästä laatikosta löytyivät vanhojen hajonneiden arskojen linssit. Sitten vain kouraan jesarirulla ja lopputuloksen näette tässä.

There was no simple way to adjust the lightness of the webcam. One possibility was to go through the terminal and type up some suitable commands and tweak it that way. Unfortunately, for that method to work the OS needed updating and for reasons completely unrelated, that turned out impossible right now.

Then today it for some reason occurred to me to see what effect placing my sun glasses over the webcam would bave. And low and behold, it worked. Luckily I'm an incorrigible hamster who throws little away and so in one of my drawers I found a pair of lenses from broken sunglasses. Grab one and a roll of gaffe tape and this is the result.

I found this yesterday, all alone and homeless. It has plenty of buds below the big flower and I'm hoping to see them all bloom.

Tänä viikonloppuna on sitten keskiaikamarkkinat. Pakkohan siellä oli edes kerran käväistä, kuumuudesta huolimatta. Ikävänä tuliaisena lähti mukaan aivan järkyttävä päänsärky. Mutta löytyi muutama mukavakin tuliainen.

First, stone beads. There was no way I was going to say no to these.

Someone was selling old textiles, beautiful and skillfully made laces and emroideries. I picked these out of a sale basket, they were very lovely and in wonderful condition. I have no idea what I'll do with these (presumably tray/magazine holder straps), but they definitely are beautiful.

Tämä sitten on suosikkini. Eräs monista lankamyyjistä oli ottanut mukaansa suuren pärekorillisen satunnaisia värjättyjä suomenlampaan villoja. Tällä kertaa ihastuin punaisiin ja ruosteen sävyihin, näistä tulee mieleeni hehkuva tähtisumu täynnä syntyviä tähtiä.

And last but not least, my favourite buy. One of the many yarn peddlers had brought along a big basket mix of dyed Finnish sheep wools. This time I was drawn by the red and rust colours. They remind me of a glowing nebula, filled with nascent stars.
