Tuumasin sitten että jos kerran ei sopivaa löydy, niin ei kai tuollaisen näpertäminen itse olisi niin mahdotonta. Prototyypin valmistamiseen löytyi ruotsalaisesta halpistavarataloketjusta sopivalta vaikuttavat tarvikkeet, eli varastohylly, maalarin suojamuovia ja jeesusteippiä.

It all began when I got the bright idea to try growing cucumbers. I didn't think they'd fare too well on my balcony as such, so I wanted a greenhouse for them. In previous years I had seen plenty of nice and high balcony greenhouses for sale. You know the type, a flimsy metal frame with a plastic hood over it. But of course the usual happened, ie. when I decide I want one, they're nowhere to be seen. I could only find greenhouses a bit over a metre high and as a perennial optimist (cough) I naturally expect my cucumbers to grow much higher than that.
So I thought that if I can't find one, maybe I could make one. A local Swedish cheapo hardware store chain provided the material for this prototype; a storage shelf, painter's protective plastic and jesus tape.
Prosessista ei ole valokuvia, koska kaikki huomioni meni miettimiseen ja näpertämiseen. Mutta tässä joitain kuvia valmiista, joista kai saa jonkinlaisen käsityksen rakenteesta.
Kasasin hyllykön jättäen keskimmäiset hyllyt pois, koska tarkoituksenani on kasvattaa köynnöksiä. Jos kaikki hyllyt olisi jättänyt paikalleen, rakennelma sopisi ruukuille. Hyllykön ympäri käärin kaksi kerrosta suojamuovia. Olisin halunnut paksumpaa, mutta kirkasta muovia oli vain tällaisena ohuempana versiona. Ostamani 55 sentin levyinen muovi, jonka toisessa laidassa on teippi, osoittautui tähän aika käteväksi. Totesin myöhemmin että muovin oma teippi ei pidä pitkiä aikoja, mutta rakennusvaiheessa sitä on kätevä käyttää apuna. Alkuperäinen aikomukseni oli tehdä muovista irrallinen huppu, mutta päädyinkin vain teippaamaan muovin suoraan hyllykköön. Vahvemmasta ja helpommin käsiteltävästä muovista olisi hupun tekeminen voinut onnistua paremmin.
Kasvihuoneen kokoon taittamista en ole koettanut. Uskoisin olevan mahdollista irroittaa teipit alareunasta ja kääriä muovit ylähyllyn ympärille, sitten hajoittaa loppuhyllykkö ja pakata koko roska osina. Tätä ei tosin ole ajateltukaan muuta kuin yhden kesän käyttöön, joten saa nähdä tuleeko asia koskaan ajankohtaiseksi.

I have no photos of the process, because I was too preoccupied with figuring it out and doing the actual building. But I took some of the finished greenhouse, I hope they give some sort of idea of the construction.
I assembled the thing with with only the top and bottom shelves, because the whole thing is meant for vines. If all the shelves were included, the greenhouse would work for pots. I surrounded the shelves with two layers of the plastic sheeting. I wanted thicker plastic, but the only clear plastic sheeting available was the thin kind. The 55cm wide plastic I bought had some painter's tape attached on one side, and it seemed suitable for this purpose. I later found that this painter's tape doesn't hold for too long, but at the construction stage it came in handy. My original plan was to construct a separate bag out of the plastic, which I would then pull over the shelves, but I ended up just taping the sheets onto the shelves. A stronger and stiffer plastic might have been easier to handle and thus better for constructing a separate bag.
I haven't attempted disassembling the greenhouse. It should be possible by detaching the tapes at the bottom and wrapping the plastic around the top shelf, and disassembling the shelve structure, storing the whole thing in parts. That said, this is really only intended to be one summer solution, so that may never be a major consideration.

Kasvihuoneen etupuoli paneeli syrjään vedettynä. Etupuolen kaksi muovipintaa ovat kiinni ainoastaan yläreunastaan, joten ne voidaan vetää verhomaisesti syrjään kun kasvihuonee pitää avata. Keskellä ja alareunassa on kiinnikerenkaat pitämässä niitä suljettuina.
(Huom: "verhojen" keskireunat aion vielä viimeistellä jesarilla, tähän asti niissä on ollut vain muovin oma reunateippi ja se alkaa irtoilla.)

The two plastic sheets in the front are attached only at the top, so they can be pulled aside like curtains when the greenhouse needs to be opened. The panels have attachment loops in the middle and at the bottom to keep them closed at other times.
(NB: I intend to finish the centre edges of the "curtains" with jesus tape. So far the only there's only the plastic sheeting's own tape keeping the sheets together and that's beginning to come off.)

Ensimmäinen kuva kasvihuoneen sisäpuolelta. Kasvihuone on kiinnitetty parvekkeen kaiteeseen nippusiteillä, muuten se auttamatta kaatuisi tuulessa (jota tällä partsilla RIITTÄÄ). Kaikki läpiviennit on vahvistettu jeesusteipillä molemminpuolin, jotta muovi ei repeäisi. Jälkimmäisessä kuvasssa lähikuva suljinmekanismista, joka koostuu pelkistä rautalankalenkeistä, jotka sidotaan narulla yhteen.

Two details.
The first photo is from the inside of the greenhouse. The greenhouse is attached to the balcony railing with zip ties, as it otherwise would get blown over by the first gust (and my balcony is WINDY). Whereever the plastic is punctured, the hole is fortified with jesus tape on both sides to keep the plastic from tearing. The second photo shows the closures, which really are nothing but wire loops tied together with string.
Siinä se sitten olikin. Kesä näyttää mihin tuosta hökötyksestä on, toivon mukaan se antaa edes hieman paremmat olot kurkuntaimille kuin pelkästään avoin ruukku parvekkeella. Ehkä laitan vielä lisää kuvia kunhan asukit ovat muuttaneet sisään.

So there you have it. The summer will show if the thing is worth the time and money put into it. Hopefully it will provide at least a little bit cozyer circumstances for my cucumbers than just an open pot on the balcony. I may post more photos later when the seedlings have moved in.
